Rest In Peace: Shaper Al Byrne passes away

New Zealand surfing great Allan Byrne has passed away in Bali after suffering head injuries in a motorcyle crash. The 62-year-old Hamilton-born Byrne, who had lived in Australia since the late 1970's, was holidaying in Bali and was due to surf in a contest there this week.

A website dedicated to more 'mature' surfers has been launched with those behind it saying their aspiration is to create a base for the sharing of old surfing stories and pictures. The site, silverbacksurfers.com hails out of New Zealand (mainly around Auckland’s west coast beach Piha) where a group of 40 and 50 somethings have decided to take their shared camaraderie around surfing online.

Jordy Smith win's X Games Real Surf Gold

Jordy Smith has won the Men’s Surfing “Real Surf” presented by Oakley component of the X Games. Each of the eight invited surfers submitted 90-second videos with a maximum of eight tricks to be judged by a committee of well-respected surf industry professionals. A first place prize of $50,000 as awarded to the winner, as well as gold, silver and bronze medals for the top three finishers.
