Red Bull to run new format surf event in fresh water pool!

3rd Sep 2015

Red Bull Unleashed is a brand new surfing event set to feature some of the most progressive surfers in the world. Held in the best man-made surfing lagoon ever built, a capacity crowd of 2,500 spectators will be closer to the action than at any previous surfing event.

By generating waves on demand, giving every surfer equal opportunity and without the wave lottery that can come with unpredictable ocean swells, the event will also unveil a fresh, exciting format brand new to surfing.

Unhindered by having to juggle conventional surf event parameters such as ocean swell, tide and local winds, Surf Snowdonia’s lagoon offers the ideal blank canvas for surfers to express themselves.

“It’s been an awesome process selecting the athletes and coming up with a format that matches something as futuristic as surfing a head high man made wave,” said Red Bull Unleashed Sports Director and former World Championship Tour surfer Jarrad Howse. “With innovation, progression and crowd interaction as themes, I’m really excited about seeing something truly groundbreaking go down.”

An exciting 24-man field will showcase top talents from freesurfing and competition alike including Albee Layer & Ezekial Lau (HAW), Jack Freestone & Mikey Wright (AUS), Dillon Perillo & Kainoa Igarashi (USA), Brendon Gibbens (ZAF) and Billy Stairmand (NZ).

“The wave looks so fun, just to surf it sounds amazing but to compete in it sounds even better. It’s going to be amazing hanging with all the boys, especially with this being the first event of its kind.” said Leo Fioravanti.

Red Bull Unleashed will feature a brand new competition where surfers will compete head to head, wave for wave, in best of five matches, the winner advancing to the next round. In another departure from conventional surf events, the judging panel will be made up of an esteemed crew of former pro tour legends, including Pipemaster Jake Paterson, former World no.2 and XXL winner Brad Gerlach, as well as European charger Alain Riou.

“The potential is there for some crazy performances to go down,” said Paterson. “With a stacked talent roster from around the world, bringing names you never normally see in competition, surf fans are in for a real show.”

Spectators can expect to witness mind-blowing performances from some of the most exciting freesurfers in the world at close range as they take on the game-changing, no waiting period format and guaranteed perfect waves in a stadium atmosphere.
