Raglan Surf Co, 1992

The late Craig Hughes opened the Raglan Surf Co with his wife, Liz, in 1992, fuelled by his passion for surfing, his talent for making surfboards and his deep love for Raglan. 

The Surf Co quickly became one of the most progressive surfboard factories in New Zealand, with mastercraftsman Craig at the helm and a handful of skilled locals backing him up. 

In the early 2000,’s Craig moved the manufacturing side of things just out of town, and the Surf Co furthered evolved as a retail shop through the vision of Craig and Liz. The pair took the building from a dusty factory and transformed into what would be known as ‘Raglan’s surf shop’, and a home away from home for both the Hughes family and many others.

With the passing of Craig in 2013, new changes presented themselves to the family, and a collective decision was made to find a new home for the Raglan surf shop and continue what their father had started. 

The Hughes family packed up the remnants of the original Raglan Surf Co and moved two doors down Wainui Road, to what was once known as Vinnies. Originally built in the late 1800’s, it was one of the very first buildings in town, so it was quite fitting that the two local icons have come together. 

With more room to showcase their surf knowledge, the Hughes Family offers a comprehensive range of surf hardware, and an impressive lineup of homegrown surfboards, shaped with the knowledge passed down by Craig himself, the board range is more aptly known as the infamous Hughes Surfboards.

Hughes Surfboards features everything from longboards to mini-fish, to high-performance shortboards in traditional P.U. construction or custom epoxy options. Don’t see one in the racks you like? Raglan Surf Co also offers a quality repair service and are installers of genuine FCS and Future Fins systems. 

An extensive surfboard and wetsuit range is available for day or long-term hire, and beginner to advanced level lessons or coaching can also be arranged. 

Raglan Surf Co also offers the exclusive Allpress Espresso from their very own in-store coffee bar.
