Before Hughes Surfboards, there was Wave Graffitti.
Wave Graffitti was established in the 80’s over in Ulladulla, NSW, where the late Craig Hughes – our old man and Raglan Surf Co founder, was living at the time, surfing and shaping surfboards.
Inspired by the graffiti movement and under the moniker of Wave Graffitti, Craig’s boards took on a life of their own, with his hand drawn bold graphics, fluro sprays and that unforgettable skate grunge vibe.
The ocean plays a huge part in every Kiwi’s life. For some it’s their haven, others it’s where they gather kai for the family. No matter what the ocean means to you, it’s essential that we take care of it.
Yet, on any given day, on any beach, you will find plastic. Microplastics, macro-plastics, hard, soft, and everything in between. It’s heartbreaking. We can’t lose faith but we can keep doing our best to keep it clean - and that’s where the giveaway comes in.
We happened across this board on TradeMe a few weeks ago and couldn't pass it up... it almost slipped through our fingers but luckily we shared a bit of our story with the seller and got this piece of history back in our hands.
In this yarn, I was invited to sit with Larry Fisher (aka Lazza Fish), Teacher and Surf Coach at Raglan Surf Academy, and Luke Hughes from Hughes Surfboards as they went through the motions of designing a new custom board (or three). A fly on the wall with a fish on the couch, shall we say. While I may have omitted most of that in this first part – and a few other gruntings from Mike the Builder about a new paddle-tracking app on his Apple Watch – I did find out a bit about how the world’s biggest grommet became generations of grommets’ favourite role model.
